What is happening att the moment?
We are preparing the ship for the voyage next summer. She is placed in the shipyard in her home port in Haugesund, Norway.

What is the planned route?
We plan to leave Haugesund, Norway April 24 sailing the historical route the Vikings explored a 1000 years ago. We head for Iceland, Greenland, Canada and USA. You will find details here drakenexpeditionamerica.com/route.

How can I join the project?
The application for volunteers is open. You find the application form here.

Do you have a follow ship?
Yes, when crossing the North Atlantic Ocean Draken will be followed by a follow ship. The chase boat will give the expedition security but also provide with cargo space, possibilities for communications and a filmstudio.

Where do you sleep?
On board the boat there is a tent that shelter 16 sailors at the time. The crew sleeps in watches, 4 hours work, 4 hours rest. The tent is actually the only shelter there is for the crew besides the two heads, ships toilets, and the small nook for navigation instruments. Theres is no “under deck”, Draken Harald Hårfagre is so shallow there is only room for ballast and food storage under deck.

How do you cook food?
There is a open air kitchen where all food is cooked. There is a food storage space under deck.

Is Draken Harald Hårfagre a replica?
No, Draken Harald Hårfagre is not a replica. The ship is constructed with great knowledge about traditional boatbuilding, knowledge about the construction of the Gokstad ship and from inspiration from the Norse Sagas.

The Vikings were accomplished navigators, artisans, traders and story tellers, but their greatest triumph was the ship they built.
